Volunteers Needed to Provide Service to the Area's Seniors

HORNELL, N.Y. (WETM)— Faith in Action Southern Tier New York needs volunteers to provide essential services and transportation in Steuben and Chemung County.

Faith in Action is a nonprofit organization that has been in service since 1995. It is made possible through partnerships with the United Way of the Southern Tier, the Steuben County Office for Aging, and the Chemung County Department of Aging and Long-Term Care.

Through the program, seniors aged 60 and older connect with volunteers who need assistance with tasks, including transportation to the grocery store and medical appointments.

“We are primarily in need of volunteers,” said Angela Jenkins, Faith in Action Office Manager. “We service both Steuben and Chemung counties, so we need volunteers to help us provide to the clients in our area,” she said.

Executive Director Edna Kayes says the program is intended to be flexible for volunteers.

“It’s not hard, it’s based upon when you’re available, not on any assigned times or days, it’s just when you’re available to help others that are seniors, 60 plus that want to remain in their homes and in the community,” said Kayes.

All volunteers must be screened and pass a background check before participating in the program.

While the volunteers meet practical needs for the seniors, Kayes says the experience can become a lot more meaningful.

“One of the things that’s wonderful is that you get to learn a lot of stories, a lot of people’s life stories that are absolutely amazing, and you learn things that you have never heard of in your life,” said Kayes.
